John Fox Haag - John Fox Haag Gallery
This work explores positive and negative imagery simultaneously. By combining positive and negative passages, I embrace how opposites really do attract. I am working in intricate and precise ways technically, while creating mystery that elicits an emotional response.
After years of painting watercolors on paper, my goal was to eliminate the cost of framing. Framing under plexiglass provides protection to work on paper from UV Light. In 2015, during the process of switching from paper to wood panels, I developed a way to make the wood surface receptive to watercolor paint, similar to the way paper is receptive to watercolor. This process provides UV protection and it eliminates the need for framing under plexiglass.
As a foundation, I prime the wood panels with gesso and an absorbent ground, making a surface that is both textured and receptive to paint, similar to paper. Once I complete the painting in watercolor, I spray it with GOLDEN Mineral Spirit Acrylic Varnishes with UVLS (Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers). The varnish seals the painting permanently while providing UV protection. As a result, the final painting is now referred to as Mixed Media, no longer as Watercolor. JohnFoxHaag.com
